MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Randy Dobnak pitched seven scoreless innings for his first major league victory in five years as the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 4-0. Dobnak gave up four hits and a walk while striking out four. He had three 1-2-3 innings and no Twins runner advanced past second base. Dobnak hadn’t won a game in the big leagues since May 21, 2021, when he was pitching for the Twins. Tyler Tolbert doubled and homered and Salvador Perez had two hits, including his first triple since 2022. Twins starter Joe Ryan, pitching for the first time since he tied a major league record by allowing six home runs in a loss to the Guardians on July 20, allowed four runs on eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts over six innings.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins placed center fielder Byron Buxton on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday with a right hip impingement. Buxton, who has battled soreness in his right hip most of the season, left Tuesday’s 3-2 win over the Kansas City Royals in the fifth inning. The 32-year-old Buxton spent 15 days on the IL earlier this month with a similar injury. He was unable to play in the All-Star Game after being voted as one of the American League’s starting outfielders. In 82 games this season, Buxton is hitting .263 with 25 homers and 45 RBIs.
(Green Bay, WI) — The Packers front office is working on a contract extension for tight end Tucker Kraft. Packers-dot-com reports a deal could be finalized this week. Kraft is still rehabbing a knee injury he suffered last season. Green Bay opened training camp Wednesday. Before he was sidelined, Kraft was producing like one of the top tight ends in the NFL.
EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The starting quarterback audition that will shape this season for the Minnesota Vikings and perhaps define multiple careers is the featured attraction during training camp. Kyler Murray, J.J. McCarthy and their teammates have no interest in intensifying the spotlight. Both Murray and McCarthy said before the first formal practice of camp that their focus is on process and individual improvement rather how the drills are being divided up. Murray spent his first seven seasons with Arizona. McCarthy has been limited by injuries to 10 starts in two years with Minnesota after being drafted with the 10th overall pick in 2024.
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — Atlanta Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski says quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has a minor injury and should return soon. The Falcons then added Cooper Rush to training camp with Michael Penix Jr. still recovering from an ACL tear and veteran Trevor Siemian released. Former Bloomer Blackhawk Jack Strand is Atlanta’s only other healthy signal-caller. Stefanski described Tagovailoa’s injury as a “flare-up” and doesn’t expect a long absence. Tagovailoa will attend practice but won’t participate in 11-on-11 drills. Stefanski emphasized that Tagovailoa will be ready as camp continues.
(Chicago, IL) — Badgers head coach Luke Fickell acknowledges that he’s on the “hot seat” at Big Ten Media Days. His football teams have lost 17 out of 27 conference games in his three seasons. Fickell had the backing of former athletic director Chris MacIntosh, but McIntosh has left Madison for a position at Big Ten headquarters. If Wisconsin fires Fickell at the end of the season he would be due a payout of more than 21 million dollars.
(Vancouver, BC) — The Marquette men’s basketball team rolled past the University of Calgary Wednesday afternoon in an exhibition game. Twenty points from Royce Parham led the way in a 102-49 winner. The Golden Eagles started the game with a lineup of Parham,. Nigel James, Adrien Stevens, Nolan Minessale, and center Sananda Fru, with Michael Phillips the first one off the bench. Fru and Josh Clark had six rebounds each and James produced a team-high 10 assists. Marquette has another exhibition scheduled for tonight (Thursday).
