MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — The Department of Ag, Trade and Consumer Protection is reminding Wisconsin students and parents to carefully check online retailers before making purchases for the school year.
Administrator Michelle Reinen says scammers can create fake websites that resemble legit businesses.
“Just be cautious of those social media ads or links that are sent in those promotional emails and texts. And then double check the website’s address for errors or minor differences from the usual URL before entering any of your personal or payment information,” Reinen said.
Verifying a website address before making a purchase can help consumers avoid becoming victims of fraud.
