CUMBERLAND, Wis. (WJMC) — A public hearing is tonight for a proposed room tax in the city of Cumberland.
The 5 percent tax would be applied to short-term rentals like AirBnBs or motel rooms.
City Administrator Randy Reeg said it could generate an estimated $75 thousand to $100 thousand annually. Per state law, 70 percent of that must be used for tourism, like tourism marketing and promotions for the city, with the remainder for general government revenue.
Reeg noted the city is in talks with a hotel chain to develop a hotel, which the city currently lacks.
The public hearing on the room tax is at 6 p.m. tonight during the city council meeting. The council could consider and approve the measure.
