MADISON, Wis. (NWN) — With heat index values topping 100 degrees this week for much of the region, Xcel Energy offers tips to residents to conserve energy and keep homes cool all summer long.

Open interior doors to improve circulation and use ceiling fans, change or clean air conditioner filters and clean coils, keep window shades or curtains closed during the day, turn off electronic when they are not in use, use attic fans at night to draw in cooler air, install and use programmable thermostats to only lower the temps when you’re home, and run washing machines, dryers and dishwashers only after the heat of the day.

Heat waves put additional stress on the power grid, and can lead to outages.
