On this day in US history, the airship known as Hindenburg burst into flames after touching the docking tower in Lakehurst, New Jersey, killing 36 on board the aircraft on May 6, 1937. It was the largest self-propelled aircraft ever built and the pride of Nazi-occupied Germany. While attempting to moor at Lakehurst, a spark ignited the hydrogen core, igniting the hull and plunging it 200 feet to the ground.
