MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — If you’re planning on hitting the water this Memorial Day weekend and over the summer, make sure to keep safety in mind.

Here’s advice from Wisconsin DNR Boating Law Administrator Lieutenant John Sinclair.

“Life jackets are required to have for every person on board your boat, and they have to be the appropriate size. And we find that as people are kicking off their boating season, it’s really important they need to go back and check. Do we have enough life jackets in the boat? Are they the right size for the passengers I’m taking out today?” Sinclair said.

“We’re kind of kicking off the boating season and we see our waterways quickly become busy. There’s a lot of people on the water, they’re in boats, they’re in paddle sport type platforms and they’re swimming, you know, et cetera, just enjoying the shoreline. And we want to encourage everyone to be mindful and respectful of each other,” Sinclair said.
