PITTSBURGH (AP) — Rookie Drew Allar threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score as the Pittsburgh Steelers dropped the Green Bay Packers 28-9 in the preseason opener for both teams. Allar was a third-round pick from Penn State. He completed 10 of 13 passes for 154 yards, including short scoring tosses to Kaden Wetjen and Riley Nowakowski. Will Howard also impressed for Pittsburgh, guiding the Steelers to a touchdown late in the first half. Green Bay’s Jordan Love completed 3 of 5 passes while making a brief appearance. Pittsburgh star Aaron Rodgers watched from the sideline while the competition to serve as his backup heated up.

DYERSVILLE, Iowa (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have reinstated All-Star center fielder Byron Buxton from the 10-day injured list before their game at the Field of Dreams against the Philadelphia Phillies. Buxton missed 14 games with a right hip impingement. This was his second stint this season on the injured list. The first stay prevented him from playing in the All-Star Game. He played in seven games after the break and was sidelined again with the injury. Major League Baseball allowed a 27th player for the special site game, so the Twins did not need to open a roster spot for him.
