PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Pinch-hitter Jake Bauers had a go-ahead two-run double in the seventh inning, helping the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2 to complete a three-game sweep and extend their winning streak to seven. Bauers was batting for Eric Haase in Christian Yelich’s spot in the lineup. Yelich left with a bruised right hand after being hit by a pitch in the first inning. It was Milwaukee’s first series sweep in Philadelphia since 2015. Jose Quintana pitched five solid innings in his return from the injured list with left shoulder impingement. The Phillies have lost four straight.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Milwaukee Brewers designated hitter Christian Yelich left Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies after being hit by a pitch in the first inning. Yelich suffered a right hand contusion. He was hit by a 90 mph sinker from Ranger Suarez. He remained in the game but was lifted for pinch hitter Eric Haase in the third. X-rays were negative. Yelich is batting .233 this season with a team-leading 12 home runs and 39 RBIs.
SEATTLE (AP) — Cal Raleigh hit his major league-leading 23rd homer and Randy Arozarena singled home the winning run in the ninth inning to give the Seattle Mariners a 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Arozarena grounded a base hit up the middle with one out to score Julio Rodriguez, who singled against Griffin Jax leading off the ninth. Rodriguez stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Ryan Jeffers. Raleigh walloped a curveball in the seventh from Twins starter Chris Paddack, who was otherwise brilliant for eight innings. He struck out 10, walked one and limited the Mariners to four hits. Luis Castillo threw six shutout innings for Seattle, but the Twins tied it against closer Andrés Muñoz in the ninth on Harrison Bader’s sacrifice fly.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Napheesa Collier had 24 points and 11 rebounds, Courtney Williams added 20 points, five rebounds and five assists and the Minnesota Lynx beat the expansion Golden State Valkyries 86-75 on Sunday night. Minnesota (7-0) tied with New York a top the WNBA standings after losing in the championship series to the Liberty last season. The Valkyries (2-4) made WNBA history with three consecutive sellout crowds in the first three home games at the 18,064-capacity Chase Center, which is also the home of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors. Veronica Burton hit three 3-pointers and finished with 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting for Golden State.
SEATTLE (AP) — Tani Oluwaseyi scored two goals in the second half and Minnesota claimed its first-ever win in Seattle with a 3-2 victory over the Sounders. Minnesota (8-3-6) beat the Sounders (7-5-5) for just the second time in 16 meetings — and won in Seattle for the first time in nine tries. The Sounders also knocked out Minnesota in the 2020 Western Conference championship. Seattle (7-5-5) dropped its first game at Lumen Field this season, moving to 5-1-2. FC Cincinnati is the only MLS team yet to lose at home. Minnesota and Seattle combined for four goals in seven minutes, marking the ninth time in MLS history that two teams had four goals in eight-or-fewer minutes in a half. Oluwaseyi opened the scoring in the 51st.
DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Scottie Scheffler is the Memorial winner for the second year in a row. The world’s No. 1 player delivered another relentless performance. He shot 70 in the final round and turned a decent duel into another runaway. He wound up winning by four shots over Ben Griffin. That makes Scheffler the first back-to-back winner at Memorial since Tiger Woods. Lately his game has looked a lot more like the tournament host Jack Nicklaus. Scheffler now has won three of his last four tournaments. Rickie Fowler had his first top 10 of the year. That got him into the British Open.
ERIN, Wis. (AP) — Maja Stark of Sweden continued the steady play she demonstrated all week to win the U.S. Women’s Open on Sunday at Erin Hills for her first major championship. Stark shot an even-par 72 to finish at 7-under 281, two strokes ahead of top-ranked Nelly Korda and Japan’s Rio Takeda. Stark earned $2.4 million in the biggest event of the women’s golf season. The 25-year-old Stark became the sixth Swede to win a women’s major, and the first since Anna Nordqvist in the 2021 Women’s British Open. The former Oklahoma State player is the first Swede to win a U.S. Women’s Open since Annika Sorenstam in 2006. Korda closed with a 71, and Takeda had a 72.
LEBANON, Tenn. (AP) — Ryan Blaney kicked off the second half of the NASCAR season by running away down the stretch for his first Cup Series victory of the year Sunday night at Nashville Superspeedway. The 2023 Cup champ had been racing well with five top-five finishes over the first half of this season. He finally got to victory lane in the No. 12 Ford Mustang for Team Penske for his 14th career victory and first since Martinsville in November. He became the ninth different winner this season and the fifth driver to win in as many races at Nashville.
