SUPERIOR, Wis. (WJMC) — Today marks the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the Great Lakes freighter the Edmund Fitzgerald.
The sinking of the vessel was immortalized with Gordon Lightfoot’s song about the ship and its 29 sailors who perished when a November storm swamped and sank the ship on Lake Superior.
On Sunday, a new historical marker was unveiled on Barker’s Island, in Superior, the ship’s last port of call, said the city’s mayor.
