Scammers are sending messages claiming to be from online retailers offering refunds for defective products.

Watch out for fake messages about product recalls. Wisconsin Consumer protection administrator Michelle Reinen says scammers have been sending messages claiming to be from Amazon or other online retailers which claim you’re eligible for a refund.

“You can get your money back by simply clicking a link and filling out some of your personal information. This link takes you to a fake website that’s really just meant to collect that information as part of this grand phishing scheme,” Reinen said.

Reinen says if you aren’t sure about a message you’re getting from a company you usually do business with you should check their website directly, rather than following a link in a message or email.
