MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — Nearly 1,800 of the more than 17,000 deer harvested during the 2024 hunting season tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease.
“The percent of positives or prevalence rates for the disease are not consistent throughout the state. It varies drastically,” said Department of Natural Resources Deer Herd Specialist Erin Larson. “We don’t want to look at it at a statewide basis and may not even want to look at it on a county wide basis because it differs quite a bit depending on deer, deer range and habitat and what’s occurring in that particular area.”
Two counties, Chippewa and Manitowoc, had their first wild positive CWD detection in 2024.
