RICE LAKE, Wis. (WJMC) — It’s Wisconsin’s Fishing Opener today.

DNR fisheries biologist Kyle Broadway covers Barron and Polk counties. He gave a favorable forecast for local lakes and rivers and offered advice to anglers looking for fish.

“Panfish, I’d recommend like back, shallow bays with dark bottoms that are going to warm up quick. They are going to move into those. Pike, focus on vegetation, maybe more active presentations especially as the water warms up later in the weekend,” Broadway said.

“Bass, probably hanging off the ledges a little bit, so points would be a good place to target or steep ledges off the shorelines,” he added.

“Walleyes. Walleyes are post-spawn right now. There might be a little bit of spawning activity going on now, but they should be right up off the ledge. Eight to 12 feet of water, I’m guessing. Should be good, I’d recommend in general targeting any point, steep breaking shoreline or weed beds,” Broadway recommended.

Broadway also give tips on what local lakes were best for panfish, pike, bass and walleye. Listen to the full interview here.
