WASHINGTON, D.C. (WRN) — Wisconsin’s U.S. Senators appear willing to work together to fill a U.S. Attorney vacancy.

Madison Democrat Tammy Baldwin is calling for the Federal Nominating Commission to make another attempt at identifying suitable candidates. Attorney General Pam Bondi in November appointed Brad Schimel interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District after the commission failed to reach consensus on candidates for positions in Milwaukee or Madison.

Federal judges in Milwaukee this week declined to extend the former state attorney general’s 120-day appointment. Baldwin had previously expressed opposition to Schimel remaining in the post.

Senator Ron Johnson issued a statement and said he’ll work with Baldwin to reconvene the commission. The Oshkosh Republican called it “bizarre” that the judges said Schimel performed well but did not appoint him to finish out the vacancy.

Schimel’s appointment ends March 17. He’s declined comment.
