MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is sharing tips on how to reduce waste over the holidays.
DNR Waste Reduction and Diversion Coordinator Jennifer Semrau says avoid putting these items into your recycling.
“Your string of holiday lights may have burned out, but they should not be placed in your recycling bin. Holiday lights are called tanglers, meaning they can wrap around recycling equipment. Another very common tangler plastic bags and film, just like holiday lights, bags and wrap around equipment causing operations to come to a grinding halt,” Semrau said.
“Keep workers and facilities safe by taking batteries and electronics such as tablets, laptops, computers and cell phones, to a recycling drop off site or collection event. They should never go in curbside recycling bins, facilities that manage cans and bottles and paper are not set up to handle batteries and electronics,” she added.
Items like cardboard, aluminum cans, steel cans and newspaper are good to be recycled. More info can be found on the DNR’s website.
