NEW AUBURN, Wis. (WJMC) — A large grass fire burned more than 50 acres and closed state and county highways between New Auburn and Chetek yesterday.
The Barron County Sheriff’s Department and DNR said the fire started Sunday afternoon along County Highway SS and Highway 53. It grew to nearly 60 acres in total in two locations. Authorities shut down Highway 53 and County Highway SS, detouring traffic along Highways 64 and 40 and County Highway D.
It took around three hours for the fire to be controlled and roads reopened.
No injuries were reported at this time and a cause of the fire was not known.
So far this year, a total of 235 wildfires have burned more than 670 acres in Wisconsin.
