URBANA, Ill. (WRN) — Facial recognition could be a big factor in improved airport security in the future.

University of Illinois Computer Science Professor Sheldon Jacobson clears up some misconceptions about the technology.

“People associate facial recognition with surveillance, but what the TSA is doing with facial recognition has nothing to do with surveillance. It has to do with authenticating their identity. The information is deleted very quickly after that’s been done,” Johnson said.

Jacobson says changes TSA has made to security, like letting people keep their shoes on, have helped people move through airports faster without compromising safety.
