CHETEK, Wis. (WJMC) — An ice angler fell through the ice on Pokegama Lake on Tuesday afternoon.

Chetek Fire Department and other emergency responders were called to the lake near Six Lakes Resort boat landing around 2:15 p.m. The Chetek Alert newspaper says the unnamed man was pulled from the water before firefighters arrived and was freezing but unscathed.

The man told firefighters there was three inches of ice, but it became very thin in spots.

The Minnesota DNR recommends not walking onto ice until it is at least 4 inches of solid, clear ice. The Wisconsin DNR says no ice is entirely safe and factors like snow cover, cracking, underwater currents or springs and pressure ridges can weaken ice from one area to another.
