CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WJMC) — The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office has offered tips for disposing of sand from sandbags that were given out during last weekend’s threat of heavy rains and flash flooding.

The DNR advises to not dump sand in any floodplain or where it could impact surface water or any endangered species. Used sand that came in contact with floodwaters may contain more bacteria and should not be used in playgrounds, sandboxes or where there is direct contact with people, until the bacteria dissipates with exposure to the elements.

It is best to not move full sandbags to other flood events, to avoid spreading invasive species or diseases to other water bodies.

Full sandbags can be disposed of at a municipal landfill or construction and demolition landfill. Contact the landfill in advance for information.
