MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — A package of proposed legislation could keep open two facilities that offer services to Wisconsin veterans.
Republican state Senator Andre Jaque has included over $1.9 million to keep open facilities in Green Bay and Chippewa Falls that offer the Veterans Outreach and Recovery Program – funding that failed to get included in the state budget.
“With every budget there’s going to be missed opportunities. What I wanted to put forward was really a synthesis of what have been kind of expressed as the major issues for our veteran’s service organizations and individual veterans that I’ve just been talking with,” Jaque said.
Other provisions of the Respect Our Wisconsin Veterans Service Act include expanded eligibility for a refundable property tax credit for veterans and surviving spouses, and directing the UW System Board of Regents to fund the UW Missing-in-Action Recovery and Identification Project to recover and identify MIA Wisconsin veterans.
The bills could be taken up when lawmakers return to the Capitol in September.
