MADISON, Wis. (WJMC) — A bill to protect homeowners from scams has become law.
Authored by State Sen. Romaine Quinn, of Birchwood, Wisconsin Act 32, protects homeowners from being taken advantage of by businesses offering non-improvement contracts.
When used in deceptive ways, a company entices homeowners with upfront cash offers in exchange for exclusive contracts on work on their homes. Quinn said the company then puts a lien on the property, often requiring steep penalties to terminate the contract.
The law bans liens on exclusive non-improvement contracts that do not involve actual work on the home.
The bill was signed into law last week by Gov. Tony Evers.
