MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — Two amendments to the Wisconsin Constitution will be on the statewide ballot in November following approval by the state Senate on Wednesday.

One amendment targets DEI initiatives and would prohibit discrimination or preferential treatment based on race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin in public employment and education.

“There’s no doubt in mind that you will get more people or demographics if you give them things. We should not be tinkering with that, I don’t find that to be right. Unfortunately, some people in here do,” said Republican Senator Eric Wimberger of Oconto.

Democrats opposed the amendment, arguing it would harm disadvantaged people regardless of race and make it more difficult to attract people to seek employment or education in Wisconsin.

A second amendment would prohibit governments from closing a house of worship during a state emergency.
