MENOMONIE, Wis. (WRN) — Wisconsin’s latest human case of West Nile Virus is in Dunn County, where county health department director KT Gallagher says it was detected in a health blood donor.

“That’s consistent with what we we know about West Nile virus that in 80% of the cases it’s fairly mild, but in 20% it can be pretty dangerous and resulting in about 1% of those folks going to the hospital,” Gallagher said.

This is the state’s 12th human case of West Nile, and according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, 10 of those have resulted in hospitalizations.

Gallagher urges residents to “fight the bite,” by using mosquito repellents, covering exposed areas when outdoors, and eliminating standing water sources on their properties.
