MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — Members of the Wisconsin State Senate say Governor Tony Evers and Republican leaders never discussed a proposed surplus spending deal with their members.

Beloit Democrat Mark Spreitzer speaking on WISN’s UPFRONT.

“I think we absolutely could have passed, and still could, a smaller proposal that is more targeted at both school funding in the classroom and school-based property tax relief and that wouldn’t blow that kind of a hole in our budget,” Spreitzer said.

Spreitzer says what Democrats saw was a bill that had too many Republican earmarks and could have put a hole in the budget for next year. The proposal died in the Senate after no Democrats and three Republicans voted against it.
