NEW RICHMOND, Wis. (WRN) — Rain and warmer temperatures have deteriorated ice on local lakes and rivers and the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office advises ice anglers and anyone going onto the ice, to use extreme caution.

The sheriff’s office said within 2.5 hours yesterday, two vehicles broke through the ice on Cedar Lake, near New Richmond.

Around four inches of good, solid ice is needed for people to safely walk on; six inches for snowmobiles or ATVs and 12 inches for cars or small trucks. But weather, currents, springs and ice heaves can weaken ice from one spot to the next. Tell people where you are going and have ice safety gear with you if you go out on to the ice.
