RICE LAKE, Wis. (WJMC) — A winter storm impacting the state this weekend means drivers should plan ahead use caution.
The National Weather Service warns of 15 to 20 inches of snow in western and central Wisconsin, Saturday night, then blowing winds up to 45 mph on Sunday.
The Wisconsin DOT says the storm’s strong winds and new snowfall can create drifting and blowing snow across roadways. Reduced viability and possible whiteout conditions will make driving difficult, even dangerous, especially for large vehicles like trucks.
Plan for extra time while traveling and check 511.WI.gov for road conditions, and tell others where you are going and when you will arrive.
Drive slow and keep extra distance between other vehicles, especially snowplows. Make sure you have a full gas tank and a fully charged phone and an emergency kit in your vehicle in case you get stuck.
If you do slide off the road or get stuck, stay in your vehicle, turn on your hazard lights and call 911. If you can move your vehicle off the road, do so.
When conditions get bad, it’s best to not travel unless you absolutely have to.
