ELK MOUND, Wis. (WJMC) — A woman is dead following a house fire in rural Elk Mound on Thursday afternoon.
Dunn County Sheriff Kevin Bygd said a caller reported the fire in the E9000 block of 570th Avenue, immediately north of Elk Mound, just before 1 p.m. on Thursday, saying a person was inside who could not get out due to limited mobility. A delivery driver passing by attempted to get into the home and help the person but had to exit due to the heat and smoke.
Emergency responders, arriving at the scene, were also not able to enter the home, which was fully engulfed. Elk Mound, Colfax, Wheaton, Eau Claire township and Menomonie fire departments worked for several hours to extinguish the blaze. After, the body of a woman was located in the residence.
A name has not been released, pending family notification. The fire is under investigation at this time.
