MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — Wisconsin Consumer Protection is warning residents of a rise in fake online job postings.
Division director Mike Domke says criminals use those listings to get your personal and banking information, and maybe even some money if you get far enough into the scam.
“They’ll send a check and they’ll say you need to get set up. Set up with your new office equipment. So you need to buy a computer and a desk and all these other peripherals that they require and they’ll direct you to their vendor. And of course that vendor is set up and it’s actually the scammer as well,” Domke said.
That check turns out to be fake, so you will have sent your own money to the scammers and will get nothing in return. Domke reminds people to do their due diligence when using third party job sites, and research the company to make sure they are who they say they are.
