MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — Democratic Governor Tony Evers says he’s a no on a Republican tax relief proposal.

On WISN’s UPFRONT following last week’s State of the State address, Evers says a rebate check is a short sighted way to spend the state surplus.

“why don’t we do something that’s more permanent, and that is work on making sure our schools get enough money so that they don’t have to raise the property tax or go to referendum or all the things that they’ve been doing,” Evers said.

Legislative Republicans are offering some school aid as part of their package, but chided Evers in a letter saying directly providing more school funding would stop districts from finding “efficiencies”. Many districts have turned to referendums to cover basic services and operations.
