BARRON, Wis. (WJMC) — Federal immigration enforcement agents were in Barron County on Sunday, according to local authorities.
Sheriff Jodi Kummet told the Barron News-Shield newspaper on Tuesday that ICE would be in the area, prompting concerns on social media and calls to the sheriff’s department. The sheriff’s department later clarified ICE agents were in Barron County for a “couple of hours on Sunday.”
The Barron County Sheriff’s Department said the agents were looking for two people; one who had moved out of the area and another who was not located. Their names were not released.
Kummet said the sheriff’s department will provide assistance to immigration officials, if requested, but did not specify what that might entail. She told the newspaper local police do not check for a person’s immigration status, other than checking for warrants, including immigration detainers.
The sheriff’s department said obstruction or interference with law enforcement would not be tolerated.
