WASHINGTON, D.C. (WRN) — The federal government shutdown at 12:01 a.m. today.

Wisconsin US Senator Ron Johnson says he has a bill that could avert them in the future.

“There’s no bells and whistles. This thing is just simply 14 day rolling appropriation bills for any department that hasn’t been funded by appropriation. So we’re not going to hold all departments hostage in case we haven’t funded all of them, we’re going to we could end the shutdown showdowns for all time,” Johnson said.

The shutdown happened because Congress did not reach a deal to extend funding that runs out at the end of the fiscal year. Democrats including Wisconsin U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin won’t support a continuing resolution that fails to extend tax credits for the Affordable Healthcare Act.

“4 million Americans on the Affordable Care Act will have their health care terminated, and 22,000,000 will have their premiums jacked up on average by 75%,” Baldwin said.

Baldwin says about 30,000 Wisconsinites would see their premiums skyrocket. The credits were set to expire at the end of 2022 but were then extended as part of the Inflation Reduction Act.
