COMSTOCK, Wis. (WJMC) — No sign of the black bear sow that attacked a woman in her back yard in Comstock, says the Department of Natural Resources.

It happened the afternoon of July 12, and the victim, 69-year-old Karen Frye was hospitalized. She is in stable condition and recovering.

An officer shot at the bear and struck it, and the animal fled the area. The DNR set up live traps and game cameras but no signs of the bear have been found. Other bears, two males, two yearling bears and two sows were caught and released. Another sow was hit and killed by a vehicle but it was determined to not be involved in the attack.

The DNR is ceasing trapping efforts but will continue to monitor the area. Visit the DNR’s website for tips on staying safe around black bears.
