RICE LAKE, Wis. (WJMC) — The Rice Lake Police Department reports an increase in complaints of drivers passing school buses.
Authorities remind drivers that traffic laws require motorists to stop 20 feet or more from any school bus that has stopped with its flashing red lights on. Traffic in the other lane must stop as well, unless the bus is on a divided highway with a median.
These laws intend to protect children getting on or off the bus from getting struck by passing vehicles.
Bus drivers can report illegally passing vehicles and fines can be steep.
