Clemens drove in three runs and Kaelen Culpepper added three hits for Minnesota. Yoendrys Gómez earned his third save in as many games and 20th of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth. A.J. Minter (2-2) got the last two outs of the seventh inning and Jeff Hoffman struck out three batters in the eighth. Ronald Acuña Jr., Lane Thomas and Ozzie Albies had RBIs for Atlanta.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Olivia Miles had 20 points, seven assists and five rebounds before leaving midway through the fourth quarter with a left ankle injury, and the Minnesota Lynx beat the Golden State Valkyries 77-66 in a matchup of the WNBA’s top teams. Kayla McBride also scored 20 for the Lynx and did Stephen Curry’s signature “night night” gesture after a late 3-pointer at Chase Center, home to Curry’s Warriors. Napheesa Collier added 18 points and eight rebounds for the league-best Lynx. Miles turned her ankle when she stepped on Collier’s foot. Veronica Burton had 14 points and seven assists for the Valkyries.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Tristan Muyumba scored a goal for the third straight game and Atlanta United beat Minnesota United 2-1 on Wednesday night. Atlanta (5-12-3) has won back-to-back games following a seven-match winless run. Minnesota (6-7-7) is winless in nine straight games. Tomás Jacob opened the scoring for Atlanta in the 37th minute with his second career MLS goal. Jacob was wide open on the right side after a failed clearance, and he settled a deflected shot to send it inside the post. Muyumba scored the go-ahead goal in the 78th on a counterattack to become the ninth player in club history to score in three straight games. Minnesota defender Anthony Markanich tied it a 1-all in the 58th. Morris Duggan redirected a cross off the crossbar and Markanich headed it home.
(Green Bay, WI) — The Packers running back Josh Jacobs should be available for the season opener at Minnesota. Jacobs’ 78 hundred yards rushing and 74 NFL touchdowns over that last eight seasons are only topped by Derrick Henry of the Baltimore Ravens. Having him in the lineup is important for a game against the tough Vikings rush defense. Opponents’ rushing success rate against Minnesota was less than 41 percent last season.
(Madison, WI) — Nearly nobody is betting on the Badgers when they meet Notre Dame in the season opener. Odds makers favored the Fighting Irish by 18-and-a-half points when betting opened. That has jumped up to 20-and-a-half points. Notre Dame is ranked fourth in the first AP college football poll. The ESPN Matchup Predictor gives Wisconsin just a seven percent chance to pull the upset in the game at Lambeau Field September 6th.
(Milwaukee, WI) — Two top 10 teams meet each other Friday in the first Division One volleyball match of the season. Wisconsin meets Kentucky at the American Volleyball Coaches Association tournament at the Fiserv Forum. This is a rematch of last season’s NCAA Tournament semifinal where the Wildcats prevailed 3-2. Kentucky is ranked third in the first AVCA poll of the season, with the Badgers coming in sixth. Wisconsin meets Louisville Saturday.
A growing number of states are providing tax dollars to university athletics. The move comes as major college sports programs now are paying millions of dollars to athletes. The financial battle for the best athletes has strained many athletic departments, which are now running deficits. North Carolina and Louisiana are earmarking sports betting taxes for their universities. Wisconsin has added money in its state budget for athletic costs at its flagship university. And Connecticut has created a tax credit program to benefit university athletics. Analysts see the state funding efforts as an emerging trend.
