MINNEAPOLIS, Wis. (WRN) — Keep any eye on your neighbors during the extreme heat this week.
Minnesota Department of Health Dr. Nick Lehnertz says some populations are more at risk and offers tips on recognizing the signs of heat exhaustion.
“individuals of advanced age and also the very young, those individuals maybe under the age of five or so, individuals with certain medical conditions such as heart disease or diabetes or maybe they’re struggling with weight issues, those people are also have difficulty maintaining sort of like in regulating their body temperature,” Lehnertz said.
“You’ll start to feel a little bit like fatigued or exhausted. You’ll start sweating heavily and maybe have a headache and getting dizzy. Heat exhaustion can progress into what’s known as heat stroke. Your headache gets worse and you might have nausea and vomiting. You’ll start getting confused, maybe even agitated or aggressive.”
If you start to feel any of those symptoms, immediately move to a cool location and get hydrated.
Extreme heat warnings have been issued with heat index temperatures reaching 100 degrees for the region.
