MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — The state Assembly appears ready to focus on elections.
In an unusual Capitol press conference Wednesday, Republican Assistant Majority Leader Scott Krug joined voting rights advocates and Democrat Lee Snodgrass to announce competing bills.
“My job the next six weeks is education of everybody who wants to talk about elections in the space that they’re most comfortable, whether it’s in their office or mine, to figure out exactly how we build that consensus,” Krug said.
A critical issue is getting absentee ballots counted the Monday before Election Day. Snodgrass isn’t there on the Republican proposal.
“Not in its current form, no./What would you like to see changed?/I think it’s over bloated, I think if you talk to municipal clerks that a lot of the technical aspects of it are impossible. I’d like to see a cleaner bill,” said Snodgrass.
A Monday count bill passed the Assembly last session, but the new version adds ballot drop box security provisions including 24-hour video surveillance.
