MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — Republican leaders on the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee have rejected Governor Tony Evers proposed $535 million overhaul of Wisconsin’s corrections system. Here is committee co-chair Senator Howard Marklein.
“Certainly at this point in time, you know, we’ve not seen enough details and you know . . . it’s a big issue and we need to be addressing it comprehensively,” Marklein said.
The only point of agreement appears to the need to close Green Bay Correctional Institution. Republicans have been skeptical about other elements, including changing the maximum-security Waupun Correctional Institution into a medium security lock-up that focuses on job training.
