MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — Nearly half of Wisconsinites will be required to pay a wheel tax fee to their municipality or county by the end of this year.

Wisconsin Policy Forum Communications Director Mark Sommerhauser says inflation is a major cause for the increase in wheel taxes.

“The two main sources of revenue for local governments are the local property tax levy that they collect and the aid that they get from the state, and the aid that they get from the state has been seeing increases either in some years not increasing at all or in other years increasing, but by an amount that lagged the pace of inflation,” Sommerhauser said.

The wheel tax has been an option for Wisconsin municipalities since 1967, and for counties since 1979.
