RICE LAKE, Wis. (WJMC) — Where does your mail go when you drop it in a mailbox and when does it get postmarked?

According to a spokesperson from the US Postal Service, mail sent from the 548– and 547– postal codes, is sent to processing centers in the Twin Cities, where it is postmarked. These postmarks no longer reflect the day envelopes are mailed and picked up, but the date the mail is processed, which could be days later.

If you need to have mail postmarked on the day of mailing, you can take your mail to a post office retail counter and request a manual, local postmark.

For mail heading to our area, it is sorted at a facility in Eau Claire, before final local delivery.

The USPS says for fiscal year 2025, mail was on time just over 85 percent of the time, averaging 2.6 days to deliver in our area.
